Client
RWE Renewables Australia
Location
Near Balranald, New South Wales, Australia
Date
May 2026
Overview
Located beside the Limondale Solar Farm, the Limondale Battery Energy Storage System adds large-scale energy storage to an established renewable energy site. The system uses 144 Tesla Megapack units and can charge at up to 100 MW and discharge at 50 MW.
Its long-duration storage capability allows electricity to be stored and delivered later, helping shift energy availability across different periods of the day. The project demonstrates how battery storage can complement solar generation and provide flexibility to the electricity network.
Key Features
More than 400 MWh of storage
50 MW discharge capacity
100 MW charging capacity
144 Tesla Megapack units
Connection alongside existing solar infrastructure
Challenge
Solar generation varies throughout the day, while electricity demand can remain high after sunlight decreases. Storage helps manage the difference between renewable generation and demand.
Solution
The battery stores electricity when available and returns it to the grid when needed. Its location alongside the solar farm supports the coordination of energy storage with renewable generation.
Outcome
RWE announced approval for full-capacity operation in May 2026. The facility provides large-scale energy shifting and additional flexibility for the electricity grid.
