Overview
The Agnew Hybrid Renewable Microgrid was developed to supply Gold Fields' Agnew Gold Mine. EDL designed and operates the integrated system, combining five wind turbines, a large solar array, battery storage, and a gas/diesel power station.
The microgrid was developed in stages, with solar and thermal generation introduced first, followed by wind generation, battery storage, and advanced controls. These technologies work together to supply the mine's demanding electricity requirements while maintaining power quality and reliability.
Key Features
Five wind turbines delivering 18 MW
Solar array generating 4 MW
13 MW / 4 MWh battery storage
Gas/diesel backup generation
Integrated microgrid control system
Challenge
A remote mining operation requires a dependable electricity supply, even when renewable generation changes with weather conditions. The system must balance renewable energy use with industrial reliability requirements.
Solution
EDL integrated wind, solar, battery storage, and dispatchable generation under a coordinated control system. Battery storage helps manage fluctuations while backup generation supports the mine when required.
Outcome
EDL reports that the microgrid supplies approximately 50–60% renewable energy over the long term, with higher levels possible in favourable conditions. The project became an important example of renewable energy integration in remote mining operations.
